Care Home Project


The activities of CARE Home was started by Fr. Jose Thenpillil, while doing his Doctoral research on the Socio-cultural Dimensions of HIV/AIDS in Bangalore University. It is the first of its kind and still unique. This was the first society started to do Home based care for persons living with HIV/AIDS in India. When the activities started in 1998 there was only one Counsellor together with Fr. Jose. The Society CARE Home was registered officially in 2000 and launched its programmes in an extensive way then onwards. The works and programmes of CARE Home proceeded with the help and support of Mrs. Maureen Bray and Mrs. Sandie Peet from England. With the support of other well wishers from India and abroad, we established four more centers in the two States of Kerala and Karnataka.The CARE Home has Four Claretian Missionaries doing voluntary service and seven full time staff for the day today administration and service of four centers. Now the two benefactors from England are sick and not able to support the activities. If we need to continue our work as we used to do early we need the financial support of many good and generous people. The objective of CARE Home is to provide medical support, counselling, nutrition food to people infected with HIV/AIDS in the States of Kerala and Karnataka and to support the education of their children and to provide Awareness and education programmes on HIV/AIDS to the general public.


Counseling and Rehabilitition

1.Counseling of persons living with HIV/AIDS to accept their sickness and cope with situation
2.Counseling for family members to accept these persons and to care them
3.Support group meeting to enhance the sharing of common cencerns and mutual support

Awareness Programs and Education

1.Help the public to become aware of this this sickness and cast off their undue fears and wrong beliefs
2.In educational institution and rural areas
3.Education of children orphaned by the death of their parent, who were affected by AIDS

Medical care

1.Free medical support during the thime of oppertunistic infections
2.For prolonged sickness
3.According to the need ogf the patient and prescription of the doctor

Job placement

1.For the able persons who are affected by HIV

We provide them with:

• Free medication and nutrition food to lead better life
• Home based care to support the persons infected by HIV/AIDS and their families
• Counseling to enable persons infected with HIV to cope up with the stress and strains of this infection.
• Arranging regular self-help meetings to the infected persons so that they get support of doctor, social workers, counselors and
interaction with other persons


• Hospital visits to adults and children who were infected with HIV/AIDS and were     abandoned by families due to fear and ignorance • Giving awareness programmes and education to the general public on HIV/AIDS
• Rescuing elderly people who had been dependent on their sons and daughters who were the bread winners of the family and were affected by HIV/AIDS
• Visiting areas where HIV/AIDS is prevalent, giving out information in simple terms, so that the infected persons can get help from others


Education help to the affected children


When bread winners of the families are infected with this disease, the income of the family affected, medical expenses increased, education of the children are neglected and find it difficult to meet the both ends, CARE Home tries to give support as much as possible for the education of the children and medical support. The need is enormous and financial support is essential, for the project to be successful. This year we have given support to 75 students who are studying from Class I to XII. School bags, umbrellas, Note Books, pen and pencils are distributed to them.


Distribution of Nutritional food to the very poor infected families


CARE Home is providing nutritional powder to the very poor infected families, as this is essential for the well being of the children and the infected persons who has to face opportunistic infections. This has good response from the parents because it is a source of maintaining their childrens' and their health in the midst of heavy medication. CARE Home team prepares a combination of food for these patients and it is widely appreciated by all.
